Singer Ranking Roger used a Jamaican toasting style in his vocals while a brass element was added by Jamaican saxophonist Saxa. The Beat’s first single, a cover of the Smokey Robinson hit Tears of a Clown, was their only release on the 2 Tone label. WebMar 26, 2024 · The band crossed over fluidly between soul, reggae, pop and punk, and from these disparate pieces they created an infectious dance rhythm. The Beat first came to prominence as founding members of the British Two Tone Ska movement, with their classic first album “Just Can’t Stop It” fitting squarely in that genre.
