On an inboard clutch saw, there is still a half inch of gap between the chain sprocket and the side cover. On an outboard clutch, the outer edge of the clutch drum is almost touching the side cover. From what I've read on here - outboard clutches make the saw fast, powerful, light and manoeuvrable.
